IN THE USA:

  • More than 1.5 million nonprofits are registered with the IRS. (NCCS)

  • In 2009, nonprofits accounted for 9% of all wages and salaries paid in the US.

  • Nonprofits employ 10.5 million people in the US, making the nonprofit workforce the 3rd largest of all US industries, behind only retail trade and manufacturing. (Johns Hopkins Nonprofit Employment Data Project)

  • Nonprofit employment saw a cumulative increase of 5% between 2007 and 2010 despite the economic downturn. In fact, during what was considered to be the worst part of our recent recession (second quarter of 2007 to second quarter of 2009), nonprofit employment grew steadily by and average of 2.5% per year. Comparably, for-profit employment experienced a cumulative decline of 8% between 2007 and 2010. (Johns Hopkins Nonprofit Employment Data Project)

  • Nonprofit share of GDP was 5.4% in 2009 (NCCS)

  • In 2009, public charities reported over $1.41 trillion in total revenues and $1.40 trillion in total expenses and $2.56 trillion in total assets. (NCCS)

  • Charitable contributions were $290.89 billion in 2010, an increase of 2.1% (Giving USA 2011).  Individual giving makes up 73%. Foundations give 14%, bequests are 8% and corporations give 5%.

  • Foundations gave $45.7 billion in 2010, about the same as 2009. (The Foundation Center)

  • Individuals gave $211.77 billion in 2010, about the same as 2009. (Giving USA 2011)

  • In 2010, 26.3% of US adults said they volunteered through an organization, contributing a total of 15 billion hours or $279 billion at average wages. (Current Population Survey, Sep. 2010)
IN TEXAS:
  • There are 97,942 nonprofits registered in the state of Texas. (NCCS)
  • Nonprofits in Texas reported more than $93 billion in revenue and more than $345 billion in assets.
  • Total payroll for nonprofits in Texas is $16.8 billion. (Johns Hopkins Nonprofit Employment Data Project)
  • Texas ranks number 5 in total giving by state (Total giving: $2,286,522 in 2009). The Foundation Center 

IN NORTH TEXAS:

  • There are 28,105 nonprofits registered in the 16 counties that make up North Texas. (State of the Sector 2012, CNM)
  • Of those nonprofits, 23,327 (83%) have budgets of $100,000 and less, but there are also 511 nonprofits in North Texas with budgets over $5 million. (State of the Sector 2012, CNM)
  • Nonprofits in North Texas serve a variety of missions with 28% serving Human Services, 22% are religion-related/spiritual development and 19% serve education. (State of the Sector 2012, CNM)
  • 102,154 people are employed by nonprofits in North Texas, 3.15% of all private employment (Johns Hopkins Nonprofit Employment Data Project)
  • Nonprofits in North Texas reported $27.2 billion in revenue and $178.7 billion in assets. (State of the Sector 2012, CNM)
