- In 2009, nonprofits accounted for 9% of all wages and salaries paid in the US.
- Nonprofits employ 10.5 million people in the US, making the nonprofit workforce the 3rd largest of all US industries, behind only retail trade and manufacturing. (Johns Hopkins Nonprofit Employment Data Project)
- Nonprofit employment saw a cumulative increase of 5% between 2007 and 2010 despite the economic downturn. In fact, during what was considered to be the worst part of our recent recession (second quarter of 2007 to second quarter of 2009), nonprofit employment grew steadily by and average of 2.5% per year. - In 2009, public charities reported over $1.41 trillion in total revenues and $1.40 trillion in total expenses and $2.56 trillion in total assets. (NCCS)
